What exactly are Liquid Colours?
Did you know that Redken launched its first liquid colour over 30 years ago? The brand began with the launch of its beloved demi-permanent gloss, along with their collection of Shades EQ. This has now progressed into the development of Redken permanent colour liquid pair in Color Gels Lacquers!
So, the Liquid colour is a little different from the traditional cream colour. This is because the consistency of the formula is more gel-like. This helps with application, as the texture is perfect for blended and also express approaches. Liquid colour is guaranteed to leave your client with not only a brilliant colour job but also ultra-shiny hair.
Liquid Color Gels Lacquers and Shades EQ are the perfect products to use if you want to achieve perfect results not only in colour, but also by leaving your client’s hair in a great and glossy condition.

What are Redken Color Gels Lacquers?
“Color Gels Lacquers is my go-to permanent range because of how much shine and coverage I get, it’s my secret time saver!” Dean Pool-Thomas- Redken Educator
So what exactly are Color Gel Lacquers? It’s a permanent colourant in a liquid form. It’s been formulated to be highly fade-resistant, whilst also achieving up to 100% coverage. Pretty good right?
The formula can also lift up to 4 levels, deal with stubborn grey areas and also leave the hair glossy with a high shine. Other factors worth mentioning are that it’s very low in ammonia. This helps if your goal is to deliver a high saturation of colour for your clients, along with a balanced radiance.
How to apply Color Gels Lacquers using the Redken Colour Mantra
At Redken, they like to do things a little differently. The technique is to follow The Redken Colour Mantra.
The Redken Colour Mantra consists of focusing on different zones of hair, curated to minimise as much damage as possible. The idea is to perfect when the colour should go on different zones of the hair, achieving better results whilst minimising the overall stress your client’s hair will be under.
ZONE 1: Re-growth/root area. For alkaline colour- apply Color Gels Lacquers to the first ½ inch of hair.
ZONE 2: The mid-shaft area. For Acidic colour- apply Shades EQ where zone 1 finishes.
ZONE 3: This is the optional zone, as not every client has hair past their shoulders. If they do- apply acidic colour (such as Shades EQ) to hair that is deemed over-porous past shoulder length. This step is to be done last as there can be a risk of damage if you are working with colour desensitised hair.
So, in short- The use of both Color Gels Lacquers and Shades EQ can be a harmonious duo, and with the help of the Redken Colour Mantra, you can achieve vibrant, shiny results whilst preserving the condition of your client’s hair!
Are the Color Gels Lacquers any different from other permanent hair colours on the market?

The product is easy to rinse out and offers ease in application no matter what your preferred techniques are. But the best edge of all, you’ll be able to provide your clients with a flawless colour finish.

Top tips for the best results
We’ve put together some tips on how we think you could get the most out of this product range:
Process from 20 minutes
Allow the Color Gels Lacquers to develop for the full 20 minutes, as this will allow the oxidative dyes to work effectively, ensuring the colour will be locked in, ensuring longer-lasting results for your client.
A tip, but by no means the only way to apply. Using an applicator bottle is the easiest application for Zone 1- always swirl, never shake the bottle!
Understand the difference between the labels
As the Color Gels Lacquers range consists of four different families, it’s important to understand what each represents so that you can achieve the best results for your clients.
Don’t worry there’s only 4, and they’re shown on the labels. Here’s a breakdown:
- Blue Label- Cool Family
- Orange Label- Fashion Family
- Brown Label- Warm Natural Family
- Beige Label- Natural Family
To achieve full coverage of white hair, it’s worth considering a formula of ½ – 1 full level darker in your chosen Super Coverage Family. This is recommended, instead of jumping straight to NN series
It’s also worth mentioning, ASH BROWN shades can be intermixed freely with other shades for grey hair. You won’t lose full coverage, and you’ll also achieve a lovely neutralisation of natural warmth.
If achieving full coverage isn’t something you’re overly concerned about, add CLEAR to your shades. This expands your colour palette and helps to reduce saturation.
The perfect pair
When deciding the perfect match shade in Shades EQ Gloss to refresh ZONES 2&3, use the shade names as your guide when selecting.
