Errol Douglas was awarded his MBE for education and services to the hairdressing industry. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential hairdressers in the world and has recently been nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year 2014!! We caught up with Errol to ask him a few questions…
1. You’ve broken a record by being nominated for HJ’s British Hairdresser of the Year 18 times! What an achievement! How does that make you feel?
It’s an incredible honour – to be recognised at that level by the industry I love and annually in company I admire really is something I’m very proud of. Also, the consecutive nature of the nominations has been very special to me.
2. You first started working in a salon when you were 11 years old – what made you fall in love with hairdressing?
It chose me! It’s definitely an industry that requires passion, creativity but above all hard work and flexibility. I seek inspiration in and out of my salon, never stop learning, always mentor and pass on my experiences to up and coming talent on my team and in the wider Fellowship for British Hairdressing arena as President. I love the talent in the industry, the way a good cut can make a client feel, it really is so much more than the “hair in the chair” – my clients’ lives are reflected in the looks we create, and it evolves, so many have been with me since I opened in 1998 and some before that.
3. You’ve already achieved so much in your career – is there anything else you’d like to do?
I’ve been fortunate enough to be approached by and to have worked with incredible brands throughout my career and I would like to develop my own wet range, so watch this space!
4. What products could you not live without?
The Tangle Teaser, Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream and a good non-sticky hairspray.
5. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to expand their clientele and create a successful salon?
Be relentless in your work ethic and listen: to your clients and to the talent on your team. Supporting team and clients require different skills but they are both vital to perfect – grow with your team, grow with your clients. Word of mouth is everything – industry and customer facing.

Errol’s 2013 EVO 3.0 represents creative evolution, the pursuit of the next big thing and his 30 years in the industry. It is inspired by his experience of the constantly changing creations he’s seen and worked on backstage and on the catwalk. His passion for the endless possibilities of contrasting texture and colour is also a key thread that links the images. His choice of Death Valley as a back drop is a visual nod to the statements that can be made when rough terrain meets smooth lines.
