In a space where an air of tranquillity and relaxation is a must, this month’s edition of Salon Design Of The Month features the Nicolas Graham concept salon and spa where clients are instantly transported to a feeling of calm as soon as they step through the door. Here, we take a look around the salon whilst discovering more about the salon’s stance on sustainability as well as their aesthetic inspiration.
Tell us more about how the Nicholas Graham salon started?
Nicholas is a very passionate hairdresser who lives & breathes his trade. Together with his wife Andrea, they built the brand from nothing to a team of 10 hairdressers whilst nurturing a strong brand partnership with Aveda. In 2012 they were able to purchase an old property & renovate it to create their dream salon.
How does the Nicholas Graham salon stand out from its competitors?
We are very conscious of tough economic times and so we believe that a point of difference is so important. From the get go, we thought outside of the box and constantly asked ourselves the question ‘What do our clients want?’, ‘What can they we do differently?’.
We offer our clients a visual journey as it’s all about first impressions. We offer complimentary treats as clients come through the door which include ice water and calming tea. We also offer relaxing rituals and all the benefits of a natural non toxic environment were we use only natural hair products & colour. We feel we give a premium service with added value to everyone.
How did you decide upon the aesthetic of the salon? What inspired you?
We were very much inspired by Ancient Asia drawing on the link with Ayurvedic medicine. We used antique Indian furniture & architecture as design accents. We drew on the mandala designs of Asian ink work. We gave the salon a modern edge by adding hand painted timber work.
How does the Nicholas Graham salon keep up to date with the latest trends within the industry?
Hairdressing trends move so fast & so we try to not let our clients become bored by their most important accessory. We ensure we give them a wearable hairstyle that works with their lifestyle. We draw inspiration from the runways, influencers & music.
What do you think makes a successful salon business?
Your team are the most important part of a salon business. Having talented people support your culture & ethos means everyone succeeds together. We feel each and every one of our team is like family who we want to see do as well as they can & follow any dreams they have.
What is the Nicholas Graham salon’s biggest achievement to date?
From our opening in 2005 we have raised thousands of pounds for local charities & local schools.

What advice can you give to other salon owners wanting to open a salon?
Just enjoy it! Be excited for each and every appointment made. I remember the feeling of our first phone call to make an appointment in our brand new salon – we were so grateful and still are for each and every client that walks through our door. It is the best industry to be part of.
How do you think social media has impacted business?
Massively, and in fact, a lot of our new salon design is based around Insta opportunities as your clients promoting your business voluntarily is priceless. We have invested in social media courses & photographic course to ensure our staff are confident to promote on social media.

What does it mean to be a concept salon and spa?
This means that we embrace the ethos of a completely natural lifestyle where we only use products that are free of toxins and chemicals and try to be as sustainable as possible. We offer our clients a choice as to what they put on the hair and body.
What is your most popular treatment?
Currently, our most popular treatment is Aveda Demi Plus Hair colour. The shine & vibrancy is just an added bonus to the fact that it is naturally derived. It is perfect for clients & stylists as the process time can be five minutes for a sheer tonal result or 20 minutes for grey blending. It leaves hair as if it has just had a treatment.
