The nail industry is huge at the moment, with stunning nail designs on Instagram sending clients flocking to get their next statement manicure.

But, there is a lot that goes into building a successful nail business from scratch! So, this month’s Salon Design of the Month comes from founder of The Glow Up Nail Bar, Jaime, who did just that.

Along with designing beautiful interiors, find out how she makes sure her business stays on top…

How did The Glow Up Nail Bar begin?

I have always worked for big corporate companies with the dream of being my own boss. I’m someone who has always paid into the beauty industry, getting my nails done every couple of weeks, so having been a client in salons for so many years I knew I wanted to be part of it.

I came across a closed old hairdresser in a vibrant and busy street in the city centre, and I just knew I had to have it and make it my own – so I took the big plunge!

How did you decide upon the aesthetic of the salon?

I wanted something Instagramable, pretty, comfortable and welcoming. Somewhere for friends and family to go together and enjoy a social treat as part of their day out, not just a quick errand to get your nails done.

I knew who my target audience was and I did my research into what would attract them, then I ran with it. I felt like it was something our city was crying out for, a bit of pink glam! My main inspiration was to incorporate arches into the design of the salon, and I feel like it really paid off.

How do you stand out from your competitors?

One thing I’ve noticed since opening the salon is the huge support from people in the industry. I have been blown away by all the messages and comments from other business owners, so I don’t like to see other salons and businesses as competitors. We are all in our own lanes doing our own things and generally supporting each other.

How do you think social media has influenced our industry?

Social media used in the right way can be a total game changer. It really can be such a positive, inspiring tool to use, especially for small businesses like myself to get your business out there for free.

It’s inspired and motivated me in so many ways in opening my salon and the response I’ve had from other business owners has been overwhelming.

How do you keep up to date with the latest industry trends?

I’m so fortunate that I have such a great team who are always striving to be their own best, and continue to learn and better themselves. The industry is forever changing and myself and my team know the importance of being able to keep up with these trends, but to also stay original. Instagram and Pinterest are amazing for inspiration for all of us.

What do you think makes a successful salon?

The Team!

It’s all about customer service. You can have the most beautiful salon, but if you don’t have the team that can offer the right service for their clients, and give them that experience, you are not giving them reason to return to you. The industry is rife, so you need to be at the top of your game.

What advice can you give to others wanting to open a salon?

Think hard about your target audience, do your research and get a great team behind you. Be prepared for the stress and tears, but also the laughter and joy – and of course believe in yourself.

What are some of your favourite products and tools to use in the salon?

We are loving The Gel Bottle Inc, their colour selection is endless and to die for. We also love Glitterbels, they are killing the coloured acrylic game!!!

We have also just started using a brand called Navy Tools for their salon hygiene system which is so easy and completely changes the way we work to sanitise our tools. We can’t wait to invest in their stunning tools!

What can we expect from you in 2019 and beyond?

We are extending!

The name of the salon is The Glow Up, so we need to do just that. We currently have one beauty room, so we are extending to be able to offer more services away from just nails.
