In this month’s edition of ‘Salon Design Of The Month’, we’re with the team at barn/it – a super salon based in Manchester whose aim is to bring clients all of their hair and beauty needs under one roof. With everything from hair extension services, to laser hair removal available, it’s understandable why the barn/it salon is the go-to destination for a day of pure pampering.
Tell us, How did barn//it start?
We wanted to offer clients all their hair and beauty needs under one roof and create a social space where they would feel comfortable staying before or after their treatments. Our building, New Church House, was the perfect place to do this. With five spacious floors, we knew we could offer something for everyone.
How did you decide upon the aesthetic of the salon? What inspired you?
Our heritage building is unique so everything was custom made to fit and to emphasise the interesting features. Our main aim was to create a space where our clients would feel welcome and relaxed. For example, we knew our nail bar had to be the perfect space for a manicure – but we have also created somewhere clients can come and relax, have a treatment while sitting next to a friend and enjoy a cocktail all at the same time.
How does barn//it stand out from its competitors?
The design of the salon means we can offer a unique experience for our clients in different zones. Our highly skilled and creative staff – from the hair and beauty team to our own mixologist at our cocktail bar – offer a wide range of treatments, services (and drinks!) to cater for every need.
How do you think social media has influenced our industry?
You only need to look at the quality of the interior of new salons to know that Instagram has been a game changer. Clients want socialable and instagramable spaces, and design is key. There are some very cool and quirky new salons in Manchester city centre and the surrounding area. Clients are far more aware of what they want now and social media enables salons to be more transparent showing who they are and what they can do.
How does barn//it keep up to date with the latest trends in the industry?
Social media and online tutorials makes education accessible to all. It is impossible to go to every industry event! We promote an environment that gives our stylists and beauticians the time for them to get involved in education and industry events.
What is barn//its biggest achievement to date?
I’m really proud of where we are today. We are a new business and have undergone a lot of change in our short time, with changes to both the salon and our team to make sure we continue to deliver the best for our customers. I believe the best is yet to come and next year will see the rewards come from the team’s hard work.
What makes a successful salon?
Customer service. Create an environment so your team always wants to deliver 100% customer service and make the hard decisions around people that don’t.
What advice can you give to other people wanting to start their own salon?
Seize the gap in the market, be something different and stand out from the crowd. Invest in a social media course, great quality photos of your salon and your team’s work – and promote the good work they do.
