What inspired the Dolce & Gabbana barbers?

Over the past few years, men have really started to pay attention and spend time and money on the way that they look – anything from fashion and fragrance to the way their hair and beard are looked after.

The brand saw a great opportunity quite early on to be able to offer a men’s-dedicated space where they can find the best tailoring, a great pair of shoes and walk out with a sharp new haircut and a nicely groomed beard. Our barbershop is a destination to have an experience.

Is there anything that sets the design of each individual salon apart, and if so, what is it?

The designers were very hands on in the design of the barber shop and took all their favourite aspects of traditional Italian barbershops to create this beautiful timeless place.

Also I would say that more so that the design itself it’s the barbers who make a barber shop stand out. It’s us who, in a way, give it its vibe. In the case of Dolce & Gabbana, it’s a great mix of the fantastic Italian heritage of the brand and the modern twist that we bring to things as a team.

How does the Dolce & Gabbana barbers keep up to date with new hair trends?

I find new influences everywhere – from magazines, movies, music videos to seeing guys walking down the street in London or when I travel. I have also done work at fashion shows, which is also a great chance of experimenting and having fun.

Having said that, I believe in working with the client to adapt whatever they are looking for to their particular style. Hair trends are great but there isn’t a style that suits everyone.

What do you think are the attributes that make a successful barbers salon?

I genuinely believe it’s the personality of its barbers and the way they interact with their clients. Men like to chat when they’re on the chair but it isn’t a ‘gossip’ situation. It’s about making them feel comfortable and relaxed – creating a relationship with each of them while also providing the excellent service they came for.

What has been the driving force behind the success of the Dolce & Gabbana Barbers?

Striking a balance between being able to offer a high-end service to all types of clients and getting the team involved in editorials, fashion shows.Stefan Avanzato 'master barber' at London's exclusive Dolce & Gabanna barbers based in Mayfair.

Can you tell us more about your personal career within the industry?

I started out doing ladies’ hair to later find out I was allergic to hair dye. It was a blessing in disguise as it made me turn to men’s hair and grooming, which I then discovered was my true passion.

Would you say there is an art to barbering?

There definitely is. Men’s grooming is all about attention to detail so technique is very important. Our hair also grows faster so it’s just as important that a shave or a cut look great at the time as it is that it grows out nicely.

How would you describe a typical client?

I don’t think there is such a thing. I have clients from all walks of life – from celebrities and footballers, to bankers and businessmen, and young creatives or students.

How do you see men’s grooming evolving over the next decade or so?

Some of the big trends of the past few years have really helped boost the business. They’ve got guys in barbershops and got them interested in it and willing to invest their time and money in a service that not only makes you feel good but that projects an image onto the world.

I think the business will continue growing in this direction, with younger guys using our services regularly and focusing less on trends and more on achieving that personal look that they want to maintain. I would say our business will not be far apart from the way (high) fashion works for men.

What can we expect from the Dolce & Gabbana barbers throughout 2017 and beyond?

It’s hard to say but as it’s been a great hit and success for clients and the brand, I predict that they soon will open other barbershops in stores in other major cities around the world.
