What is Retinol?
There are a few different types of retinol out there, but they are all types of ‘retinoids’.
Retinoids are a derivative of Vitamin A. It was once available by prescription as retonic acid, which was a very strong form used to fight acne, but could also irritate the skin.
Today, milder forms of retinol are being used in skincare formulas that offer the same benefits, but are gentler on the skin.
What does Retinol do for your skin?
There are so many benefits retinol can provide for your clients’ skin!
When used properly, retinol can help to…
- Minimise signs of ageing
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Exfoliate, renew and resurface the skin
- Support the production of collagen and elastin
- Improve radiance and uneven skin tone
So, there are so many skin issues that retinol can help to address. In fact, not only is it good for maintaining skin’s youthful appearance, it can also improve acne. Retinol works by boosting collagen production and promoting cell turnover, meaning it can help keep pores clear, preventing the formation of both blackheads and whiteheads.
Can you use Vitamin C with Retinol?
There is another skincare superhero out there that is known to help reduce signs of aging and promote a healthy complexion – Vitamin C.
So, can you use these two powerful ingredients together? To use Retinol and Vitamin C at the same time, you need to make sure they have the same pH level. Otherwise, they can end up simply cancelling each other out – meaning both products become less effective!
You also need to check whether they have a water or oil based formula. If for example you use an oil-based Retinol with a water-based Vitamin C, the latter won’t be able to penetrate through.
There is a solution though! Our Retinol skincare products at Salons Direct are enriched with Vitamins C.
They also include Melavoid, which helps lighten hyper-pigmentation, and Vitamin E, helping to protect cells from damage and keeps skin hydrated.
As the ingredients are carefully formulated to work together, you can be sure your clients are getting the benefits of both Vitamin C and Vitamin E, along with the Retinol.
When should you start using Retinol?
If you think your clients can benefit from Retinol, you can recommend they start using it from your mid-late twenties onwards. Along with helping prevent future signs of aging, it can help them achieve that coveted ‘glow’ by also reducing sun damage, pore size and blemishes.
For those starting to use Retinol in their twenties, they can start with milder formulas and still see results. This is because skin cell turnover is usually still quite naturally high.
How long does Retinol take to work?
At first, some people experience some side effects when they first start using retinoids. During this time, skin might look redder than usual or seem to be dry.
After a few weeks use however, the skin will start to adjust. After about 3 months use, there should be a visible improvement in the skin’s texture and appearance.
