The flexibility of the rubber base provides a shock absorbing base that helps prevent general wear and tear and stress fractures to the natural nail while doing normal everyday routines.

Instead of the nail cracking the base will flex with the impact preventing those hair line fractures that then become weakness in the nail. 

You can also layer this with normal base should the client need some extra strength, making sure rubber base is always on the nail plate first.
