Here at Salons Direct, we've been partnered with Dyson for over a year now, and we are always very excited to see how the Dyson engineers continue to push the boundaries of innovation within the salon electrical space.
The latest Dyson launch is no exception. The Dyson Supersonic r™ Professional hair dryer is Dyson’s lightest, smallest, and most precise styling tool.

Introducing The Dyson Supersonic r™ Professional
Dyson engineers were tasked with creating the smallest hair dryer with powerful precision. This meant doubling down on the core technology within the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer—particularly heater technology, motor performance, and attachments—re-engineering a machine to deliver precision for professionals in an entirely new form factor.
The Dyson Supersonic r™ Professional hair dryer is 30% smaller, 20% lighter, and more manoeuvrable - delivering fast drying, smoother, frizz-free and shinier results.
It is enabled by power-dense technologies—a new streamlined heater, the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor, and intelligent Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors in each attachment.
These sensors communicate with the hair dryer and automatically adjust the motor and heater to deliver optimal airflow and temperature.
“The Dyson Supersonic r™ Professional hair dryer builds on the technology and knowledge we have developed, offering fast drying and styling benefits for all hair types with no heat damage.
Our new streamlined heater technology developed for this machine is a world-first, combined with our high-speed motors enable the lightweight form factor, and fast precise airflow.”
-Gavin Galligan, Senior Design and Development Manager, Dyson Beauty

Solving an industry-wide problem
Since 2017, Dyson has talked to 696 stylists to understand their work, habits, and needs.
Dyson engineers have looked into their challenges and worked on solutions. Typically, a stylist sees 4-16 clients daily, spending 30-60 minutes on each one and adjusting their angle up to 30 times per session.
Many stylists suffer from strain-related injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.
These insights helped create the Dyson Supersonic™ Professional hair dryer, offering professionals a flexible and responsive tool for superior styling and results.
New ergonomic format
The Dyson Supersonic™ Professional hair dryer has a unique shape. Designed with a revolutionary 'r' curve, it weighs only 325 grams—less than a bottle of hairspray. This shape makes it easy for professionals to reach difficult areas comfortably and with better control.
Streamlined flow heater for even heat
Dyson's new heater technology is small, light, and very powerful. Unlike traditional heaters that use open wire on mica boards and cause uneven airflow, Dyson's design ensures consistent heat.
Dyson hair scientists have studied how to prevent heat damage to keep hair healthy. Dyson’s streamlined flow heater technology is a first in hair dryers. It features a unique curved heater made of symmetrical foils. This design creates a suspended track that maximises airflow exposure while maintaining performance.
The high-pressure air passing through the curve heats evenly, eliminating hotspots. As a result, users enjoy consistent temperature, even with attachments, allowing for higher temperatures for styling, fast drying, and no heat damage to the hair.
“The quickest change of temperature I have ever felt in a hair dryer.”
Irinel de Leon, Celebrity Stylist

Intelligent heat control
Like all Dyson hair care machines, the Dyson Supersonic™ Professional hair dryer features intelligent heat control. A glass bead thermistor and an embedded temperature sensor in the heater measure the air temperature over 20 times a second, preventing extreme heat damage and helping protect the hair's natural shine.
Optimised RFID attachment
