Skinification of hair header image

With a sharp focus on scalp care and the overall health of our hair, the ‘Skinification of hair’ is the latest trend coined by the beauty industry. You may have heard this term doing the rounds but need clarification on what it means to you as a salon professional and your clients. Alternatively, this article may be the first time you’ve encountered this new, trending phrase.

As a haircare professional, your clients may be leaning into the skinification of hair trend and looking to you for advice on improving their hair and scalp health through targeted routines and products. In this trend report, we will explain everything you need to know about the skinification of hair.

What is the Skinification of hair?

The concept suggests giving our hair and scalp the same TLC as we do our face and body. Skincare routines are typically created around a particular skin concern or goal. It was only a matter of time before the hair care industry followed suit by acknowledging that not everyone’s haircare requirements are identical.

In recent times, many salon professionals have also noted that their clients actively seek more in-depth knowledge regarding the health and condition of their hair and scalp. Clients also want to invest in the best hair care products to suit the specific needs of their scalp and hair type instead of using products that simply cater to the masses.

Why are clients choosing to create a more tailored approach to their hair?

Hair health is a significant factor that many clients are particularly interested in. This is especially the case since bond-building and deep-level repairing products such as OLAPLEX, and the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate have increased in popularity.

A spotlight on scalp health

Recently, a particular focus has shifted towards clients looking to improve the health quality of their scalps. After all, healthy hair stems from a nurtured scalp. In 2023 and beyond, clients will most likely seek products that actively benefit specific scalp concerns such as hair loss, thinning hair, dandruff and psoriasis.

And as this market expands, more and more hair care products are being specifically formulated with scalp health in mind to hydrate, help remove scalp buildup, and exfoliate dead skin.

Which are the best skincare ingredients for your hair?

Skincare ingredients in hair

The active ingredients and vitamins found in your client’s favourite skincare products are now being extended into their hair care products. Some core ingredients in the ‘Skinification of hair’ movement include Glycerin, Squalane and Hyaluronic Acid for intense hydration, Amino Acids for strength and resilience and natural ingredients such as JoJoba oil to help amplify shine.

Ceramides, also extremely popular in skincare products to help support the skin’s natural barrier system, are crossing over into haircare to have the same effect. You may also start to see other popular skincare ingredients, such as Keratin boosting Niacinamide, joining the ingredients roster in your favourite products as more brands adopt the trend.

Glycerin

Glycerin deeply moisturises the hair whilst helping to prevent breakage. Derived from plant oils or animal products, Glycerin is a humectant, which means it can pull in moisture from the air to help keep hair hydrated and healthy.
