So what exactly are Color Gel Lacquers? It’s a permanent colourant in a liquid form. It’s been formulated to be highly fade-resistant whilst also achieving up to 100% coverage. Pretty good, right?
The formula can also lift up to 4 levels, deal with stubborn grey areas and also leave the hair glossy with a high shine. Other factors worth mentioning are that it’s very low in ammonia. This helps if your goal is to deliver a high saturation of colour for your clients, along with a balanced radiance.
How to apply Color Gels Lacquers using the Redken Colour Mantra
At Redken, they like to do things a little differently. The technique is to follow The Redken Colour Mantra. The Redken Colour Mantra consists of focusing on different zones of hair, curated to minimise as much damage as possible. The idea is to perfect when the colour should go on different zones of the hair, achieving better results whilst minimising the overall stress your client’s hair will be under.
ZONE 1: Re-growth/root area. For alkaline colour- apply Color Gels Lacquers to the first ½ inch of hair.
ZONE 2: The mid-shaft area. For Acidic colour- apply Shades EQ where zone 1 finishes.
ZONE 3: This is the optional zone, as not every client has hair past their shoulders. If they do- apply acidic colour (such as Shades EQ) to hair that is deemed over-porous past shoulder length. This step is to be done last, as there can be a risk of damage if you are working with colour-desensitised hair.

How Can I Mix Redken Color Gels Lacquers?
Color Gels Lacquers is mixed in a 1:1 ratio using Redken Pro-Oxide Cream Developers (10 – 40 vol). Develop for up to 45 minutes, depending on your desired results.
- 10 Volume: 20 minutes (1 level of lift, colouring on the same level or darkening).
- 20 Volume: 30-35 minutes (2 levels of lift / Gray Coverage).
- 30 Volume: 40 minutes (3 levels of lift).
- 40 Volume: 45 minutes (Up to 4 levels of lift).
Top tips for the best results

1. Process from 20 minutes
Allow the Color Gels Lacquers to develop for the full 20 minutes, as this will allow the oxidative dyes to work effectively, ensuring the colour will be locked in, ensuring longer-lasting results for your client.
2. Application tip
A tip, but by no means the only way to apply. Using an applicator bottle is the easiest application for Zone 1- always swirl, and never shake the bottle!
3. Understand the difference between the labels.
As the Color Gels Lacquers range consists of four different families, it’s important to understand what each represents so that you can achieve the best results for your clients.
Don’t worry there are only 4, and they’re shown on the labels. Here’s a breakdown:
- Blue Label- Cool Family
- Orange Label- Fashion Family
- Brown Label- Warm Natural Family
- Beige Label- Natural Family
4. Grey coverage
To achieve full coverage of white hair, it’s worth considering a formula of ½ – 1 full level darker in your chosen Super Coverage Family. This is recommended instead of jumping straight to NN series.
It’s also worth mentioning ASH BROWN shades can be intermixed freely with other shades for grey hair. You won’t lose full coverage, and you’ll also achieve a lovely neutralisation of natural warmth.
5. Reduce saturation
If achieving full coverage isn’t something you’re overly concerned about, add CLEAR to your shades. This expands your colour palette and helps to reduce saturation.
