This month we caught up with Samantha Boot, owner of Samantha Boot Hair based in Cannock. 👇
How did your salon begin?
After 12 years of working at a large Franchise where I completed all my training, including the Wella Master Colour Programme, it was time for me to work more flexibly around my two small children.
After having my children, I developed awful anxiety. This led to me struggling to feel comfortable in my workplace and the fast pace of a busy salon. After many conversations with my partner, we made the decision to open my own salon within our home.
I can now work on a private one-to-one basis with my clients, making me feel calm, comfortable and confident in my environment.
How did you decide upon the design of your salon?
When designing the salon, I wanted to create a neutral, calming environment with statement pieces like my sideboard, black skirting boards, and doors. The dark brown leather basin and the Lotus Washington range styling chair work perfectly alongside my wooden features.
What are some of your favourite products and tools to use in your salon?
I’m a huge fan of the Dyson styling range, I’ve used the Dyson hairdryer since it came out in 2016, and after noticing a huge difference in my hair, I couldn’t wait to use it on my guests. GHD has always been my go-to straightener to use since I was a young girl and will always be my go-to when finishing off my guest’s style. I started my journey with Wella twelve years ago and will never look back. I trust the products I know to create the results I require.
How do you stand out from your competitors?
I think I stand out from other salons because I can offer a personal one-to-one experience in a luxury setting.
What do you think makes a successful salon?
Being able to offer consistent personal service during every appointment and having a one-to-one service truly means you can go above and beyond for your guest’s needs.
How do you keep up to date with the latest industry trends?
Social media has become one of the greatest tools within our industry for clients and stylists. Clients, it’s an online lookbook where they can find unlimited inspiration for their next appointments.
For stylists, it can be a great resource for learning and inspiration as we can access some of the most talented hairdressers in the industry at our fingertips. I also get yearly training offered as part of the Mater Colour Programme from Wella and ongoing support being an account holder with them.
What advice can you give to others wanting to open a salon?
With the current changes to the high street, it’s time for salons to make a change as well, more and more hairdressers are utilising spaces they have already got at their own homes to create one to one salon experience, and I believe it may be the way forward.
Be brave, go out of your comfort zone and do it, it won’t be something you’ll regret.
What can we expect from your salon business in 2023 and beyond?
I would love to branch out and offer more services for my guests; I’m currently looking into the best courses for what I want to offer.
