Welcome to the latest instalment of our Salon Design of the Month series, where we speak to real salon owners to learn more about how they started their businesses.

At Salons Direct, we love celebrating the nailshairbeauty and barbering industries and the talented individuals behind them.

Through this series, we aim to highlight the inspiring journeys of salon owners and their salon design choices. From village businesses to city hotspots, we’ll explore the diverse range of salons and the personalities behind them.

Get ready to be inspired by the stories of real salon owners…

This month, we caught up with Annie Duckers, owner of the Bloom Salon based in Bebington, Wirral. 👇

How did your salon begin?

Opening my own salon had always been a dream of mine, but it has never actually seemed to be the right time.

Out of curiosity one day  I looked online to see if there were any commercial properties local to me and this one was available.

I knew instantly and could envision myself there. I truly believe things happen for a reason, and within a matter of weeks, I had the keys – a very surreal moment and one I have been so lucky to share with both my children by my side, who have been my main inspiration to push my self out my comfort zone and take this chance.

How did you decide upon the design of your salon?

Designing my salon was something I enjoyed doing so much; I always knew what type of theme I would have wanted, and bringing this to life has been so rewarding. I wanted a calm, minimalistic space, so I kept everything neutral and warm.

By adding panelling and herringbone flooring, this added something extra. I also had two feature walls put in, which brought the whole look together.  I wanted to reflect on some of my own personality, so on the smaller finishing touches, I added my favourite flowers and jars of sweets.

What are some of your favourite products and tools to use in your salon?

My go-to product is the Tigi bedhead backwash range, which I’ve used since I started training. It is such good value for money, so when clients ask for recommendations for hair care at home, this is a more affordable option.
I love using the Color Wow products, and it is always a talking point, as so many clients have seen these being used on social media platforms.  When styling hair, I love using my GHD tong/ wand, which, again, clients love to see how this is done as often this is a really good gift to get somebody.

How do you stand out from your competitors?

I think standing out can be really hard in this industry as there are so many amazing hair and beauty salons in the local area and online. For me, it was important the salon felt welcoming and sort of a home from home, not only for clients but also for the staff I work alongside.

It is really important I make every client feel welcome and valued as they come in, ensuring everybody is greeted regardless of who they are coming to see.

I believe this is a really important element to get right as, stereotypically, salons can be daunting to walk into, especially if you are a new client. I truly believe this is what will make my salon successful, as not only Will clients continue to return, but they will hopefully tell their family and friends about their experience at Bloom.

How do you keep up to date with the latest industry trends?

Keeping up to date with the latest trends has been made a lot easier and accessible by social media platforms, but I think it’s necessary to keep a focus on what you’re doing and getting that right.

Not all trends are for everyone, but I think this works well with the industry as it enables people to find their niche.

What advice can you give to others wanting to open a salon?

My advice will always be to go for it if it feels right. I always told myself I’d rather regret doing it than regret never trying to do it. And now I’m in the position where I look and think it’s the best decision I have made – not only for me but for my family.

What can we expect from your salon business in 2024 and beyond?

I hope that in 2024, I can grow Bloom in so many different ways, but most importantly, I hope to build on a reputation of being a reliable and enjoyable place to come for all clients, old and new.
