This month we caught up with Amber Rees, owner of pwrbeautyhouseldn 👇

How did your salon begin?

My salon began in lockdown in 2021. A friend of mine had seen there was a commercial space to rent in my local area, and I fell in love with it.

 

Taking this on was a little nerve-racking, as there was so much uncertainty in the beauty industry at this time, but I had so many visions for this place, and i didn’t want to wait any longer! 

How did you decide upon the design of your salon?

I wanted something that looked clean and sleek. When I took on the property, it was one big open office space with very little character. So I added new lighting, an extra room and storage. With small pops of colour with the decor. I like a minimalistic style, and i feel like this is portrayed within my salon. 

What are some of your favourite products and tools to use in your salon?

I’ve recently found a new brand of lash extensions called lashedbyamy, which I love. They fan so easily and are super black giving me the most beautiful finish to my sets. The lash glo flexi shields are an absolute game changer. It’s glueless and sped up my treatment time so much! I couldn’t live without these now. 

How do you stand out from your competitors?

Staying true to yourself! It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but no one can do something exactly like you! I also go on refresher courses to make sure I’m up to date with training and offering the best for my clients. 

What do you think makes a successful salon?

 

Happy clients! There are many ways of keeping clients happy, but I find being consistent and reliable are the two main factors. I have some clients that would trust me with their life now! (Not sure I agree with that though, haha) 

Also, being resilient. Every day is different, and as great as it can be owning a salon, it can also be really challenging. Being prepared for any hurdles that come your way is just as important as anything else. 

How do you keep up to date with the latest industry trends?

💭 Instagram! The beauty industry is so fast-paced that it’s easy to fall behind on what’s the latest buzz.

💭 I also find forum pages on Facebook to be super helpful.

What advice can you give to others wanting to open a salon? 💡

If you’re unsure, just go for it! You have to put yourself out of your comfort zone sometimes to get the things you really want in life. It’s definitely a big step, but the benefits of it are so rewarding, and you’re much more capable of it than you think.

What can we expect from your salon business in 2023 and beyond?

I love sharing my knowledge and giving others the confidence boost they need to thrive in this industry, so working towards a training academy is my main goal for this year.
